Silver Tinsel on a Green Tree

Top: TJMaxx // Pants: Delia's // Flats: Kohls // Undershirt: Gap // Hijab: Target

Over the weekend I went to a lunch event with some local mentally/physically challenged teens and it was very refreshing to see everyone enjoy each other's company and just simply talk and eat and feel blessed. Isn't this homemade party favor the cutest?! Although of course I don't celebrate Christmas (Muslims celebrate Eid twice a year instead) the lights, magic, and good cheer of December really are so nice to see. People donate and reach out to so many people during this time of the year.

I wanted to wear this dress in a different way, one that would really work and still be modest at the same time. You might remember from this post that when you're lost, make your clothes tell a story. So I decided I'd make my clothes show winter with sparkles like you see in the first snowfall you admire from your bedroom window in the night and silver like the bows you place on presents and green like the misletoe that decorates the Hogwarts walls.

What are your favorite things about winter? Life improves just like the weather always will so remember-

Top: TJMaxx // Pants: Kohls // Boots: Steve Maddens (they turn any outfit into a cute one) // Mirror: looks antique, but it's actually just one I sneaked from my momma's room // Bangles: Eid gift
[On my face: a bit of Revlon's matte lipstick in the shade 006 Really Red]

Don't let the sun fool you- it was freezing! Oh, the sacrifices I make for my readers. (Haha, just kidding. It's my pleasure to pull crazy stunts like this :-)) I love adventuring and nature is always waiting to be explored. By the end of this photo shoot mine and my best friend's fingers were frozen red. We promptly proceeded to run to my house and whip up a few mugs of homemade hot cocoa, straight from the Godiva bar! Doesn't that sound delicious? Let me tell you that it sure was.
The sunrise was magnificent this day, and I sometimes feel that sunrises are more beautiful than sunsets- they're more private and personal, and being awake while the whole world is asleep is an experience for the books in of itself. The colors are so soft and it's so lovely to watch the earth wake up from its slumber.
Any color would pop against black/white/neutrals so you can't ever really go wrong. I decided to go with red for a more classic, timeless look. If you aren't a hijabi you could wear colored lipstick, shoes, or accessories. Just make sure they're statement pieces to catch the eye- bold, sharp shades work best.

Em Somerville Interview

Inline image 5Queen of Fine Cuisine.
Ever wondered about Em Somerville, the artist behind the cute, original, and all around glitter worthy artwork featured on her Instagram and sold on her shop? She claims that the thing she loves most about art is that your creativity is your own, and obviously, as you'll see if you continue reading, her hard work and goal to do what she loves for pay has been paying off with the amount of positive feedback she's received in the past few years. We know she loves baths, plastic dinosaurs, and being herself, but what are her favorite things to illustrate? When can she be found baking? How has Instagram affected her? Keep reading to find out all that and more :)

Pineapple Summers

Pants: JCPenny // Striped Full Sleeve: New York and Company // Pineapple Tee: Kohls // Rings: Suzy Sheirs & Ardenes // Shoes: Nine West

This ensemble consists of two completely separate shirts layered on top of each other. The matching gold and white along with the mint green and mustard made a fun experiment, and I loved getting the chance to be creative and have to go out of my way to make this work.

Happy experimenting and making new outfits of old clothes! Life is spontaneously splendid.

You're Right, Wall

You. Are. Beautiful. And don't you dare tell yourself otherwise. Look harder. Make a list of your pros and cons if you have to. But don't let negative thinking eat away at you. It's all in how you look at life. Food for thought: You call people beautiful, and they don't believe you, but you know that they are and that you're telling the truth. So when someone tells you that and you don't believe it, it doesn't make it any less true. Believe in the compliments you recieve. Swallow down that thought with your water. The glass is always half full.

Hijab (headscarf): Saudi Arabia // Top: New York & Company //
Belt: Discovery // Pants: Kohls // Shoes: Call It Spring (Canada) // Rings: Aldo

Start your preparations for the New Year now! Let's make 2015 the best year yet. You make your own happiness. For now, I'll believe in you for every bit you don't.
Promise.

Mockingjay Part 1

Last Thursday, the twentieth, I saw Mockingjay and was super ecstatic, of course, to view the film I'd waited so long for! I enjoyed it immensely, because you always do when it's your favorite book being portrayed on screen since a movie is such a different, crazy transformation. I thought it was good in a different way than Catching Fire- it was more emotionally rich, very intense and beautiful and dramatic. It wasn't on-the-surface-dumb-enjoyment; you had to actually be into the series/pay attention to the movie to grasp it all. And because it was so special, my outfit had to be, too, right?!

Warmest Time of the Year

It is a window clouded over
with the breath of a thousand
hopeless romantics
tracing initials off of
their hearts
and onto the glass

It is a mug of hot chocolate warming
snow cold, red rimmed fingertips
and filling up your insides like
a batch of lava poured straight
to your soul, right there
to fill you like a cake
that isn't as good without its filling

It is a pair of fuzzy, striped toe socks
and matching pajamas
so that during your sleepy, messy
movie nights you can brush
popcorn crumbs off your lap
as an excuse to finger the material
that takes the form of a caterpillar's cocoon,
a second layer of skin
much more effective than the first

It is the warmest time of the year,
where we are so cold our breath leaves
our dark, chapped red lips in
clouds of white
and even cars, who are so
keen to hide their life from the world,
allow themselves to exhibit the simple
motion of breathing
in
and
out
with the rest of the beings
as they emit their own puffy clouds,
chugging down the road
and breathing the kind of
breaths that really, truly, literally
makes the world a warmer place

It is when magical white powder
falls down from the heavens
like God Himself is enjoying
a slice of cake
and when he blew out the candle
some of the sifted powder fell down
so that on His birthday we all
could partake in His celebration

It is when the sun sleeps early
so the moon can have his fair share
of time in the spotlight

It is when dark lipsticks reappear
and fresh changes, too
as we decide long hair is good
for the time being
for it is good at it's job
of serving as a built-in scarf

It is a thousand books reopened and reread and relived
and a thousand worlds and characters and lives
who willingly lend their lives for us to borrow
while ours are put on hold as the blizzard rages

It is when we are alone
and forced to seek out the
warmth hidden in the cold
and it is when we are shown
just how much warmth
can be found during
even the coldest time
of the year

It is winter

Silver Snow-Dotted Pine Trees

Oh, who doesn't love matte black nail polish? Such a classy twist on a more "teenage trashy" color. I think the days of "You can wear nail polish now, but no black, alright?" are slowly coming to an end. I've added the "keep reading" tab because I blab on and on and on and some of my posts can get pretty crazy so if you're interested in seeing more of this outfit, hit that button and read (look?) away!

Greek Goddess

Last Thursday I had the spontaneous urge to be a Greek goddess for the day. (Hard to find outfits that go with the flower crown.) The outfit made it a good day, which was needed after a rough week. Wanted to title this by an acual name of a Greek godess but couldn't decide on one; they're all so strong and unique. So happy with these pictures- I can't get over how real they look! I look so genuinely happy and alive, and I'm exuberant to share my most favorite dress of all eternity with you (probably the most angelic and elegant gift I've ever received).

2014 Chicago Halal Food Festival

Hello and Salam to all! Hope your past few weekends have been treating you well. Mine have been absolutely nuts these past couple weeks and this post is about the 2nd Annual Chicago Halal Food Festival last weekend. I went last Saturday, the twenty-fifth (it was a two day event Oct. 25&26), and had myself a wonderful time with my older brother and father. [Props to my mom for staying home with my little sister, whose tummy was hurting. She got better just in time for her birthday the 27th, though ;)]

FALLing in love

Hello my lovely readers! It has now been almost an entire month of autumn (which I think sounds so much prettier than fall...probably because of how it's spelled) and I hope it has been treating you all well. This was my first day of fall outfit; I felt like embracing this year's cold change with a positive attitude and full spirit. (That doesn't mean I hate being cold and the dark weather any less, though.)

Hijab (headscarf): taken from me mum's closet (British people get all the fun words!) // Top: my sister's // Jeans: H&M (try these) // Shoes: Call It Spring // Bangles: I've had these for about seven years, a gift from my mother // Chunky Beige Bracelet: purchased four years ago in Canada's Ardene // Sweater: my mum's again // Rings: Aldo

[All photos taken by my dear friend in the morning time, so excuse any tiredness.]
I try to avoid the use of makeup, excessive or not. No promises there, but it does apply to these pictures. I find that massaging your bags teases them out and loosens them, making them as least noticeable as you can get them to be without artificial help. Basically all you do is stretch the bags, pulling them down with your thumb and index finger and releasing, repeating the motion. Unscented, moisturizing lotion (scented ones are more likely to irritate the skin with the extra chemicals and whatnot) freshens your face and makes you seem more put together while a dab of Vaseline petroleum jelly can take care of any chapped lips, which you might have seeing as you just woke up and haven't consumed too much water yet.
Chunky cardigans or loose sweaters are always a fall go to. I think with these slightly loose skinny jeans (buy one size up for a more loose take. the size difference probably won't even be enough for you to need a belt, unless you prefer to have less room for your stomach to breathe) created a pumpkin spice, knit grandmother type of look when paired together. I definitely like it more with the sweater than without; I think my jeans would have to be form fitting to wear with this particular shirt because the looseness of it over the jeans creates an I'm-borrowing-my-big-sister's-clothes look. Sometimes baggy on baggy works, and other times....well, we all know the answer to that.

Have a good fall and do all the typical but totally awesome fall-esque activities! (I,e, buy tons of pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks and go apple picking with your family.) If you had to choose, what's your favorite thing about fall? Leave a comment below for me :)
Life (c'mon cold weather, you're included in this) is spontaneously splendid.

The Selection by Kiera Cass

[Book Corner: A spider free and brightly lit corner for book lovers like me.]

I finished reading The Selection by Kiera Cass approximately two minutes ago. This is going to be one heck of a book talk. Warm up your drink of choice and get comfortable!

This is a book I'd recommend to someone who isn't a huge reader, although really I say never listen to negative book recommendations (can a recommendation be negative? Hmm) because people always think you won't like a certain book because i.e. you might not like that topic or that author but really each and every book is different and magical and important in its own way, and you can't categorize which one you'll be drawn to without giving it a chance. The reason I think people who don't read quite as much would particularly like this is because it's a really light read. It's about 300 pages and has more of what I'd call light content and simple elements (war issues, utopiac society fail, strange government systems/programs) found in most of the popular books going around in this day and age, including a bit of a love triangle. The writing isn't very advanced so you don't have to put in much effort comprehending the storyline, it's generally straightforward.

This was a really nice read in the way that the plot had a unique twist that kind of gets you addicted in it's fairytale-esque setting. I can't think of many other books pulling off this classic idea in modern light. It followed the dream I think almost all girls experience sometime in life: to be a princess. Or, in this context, the focus is on being the one out of the already selected 35 young ladies to marry the prince by having him choose you. (Okay. Clearly I can't summarize, but there are book jackets for that, no?)
The entire series is published so you won't have to wait for any of the books to come out, which is a HUGE perk minus all the potential spoilers (do not ever Google or ask around about any completed series!!). I don't think this made my favorite book list because for me personally it didn't change my life or alter my perspective as compared to some other books (The Hunger Games, The Book Thief, Life of Pi), but in of itself I had fun finding characters to root for and etc. Don't take a page out of my book, but I'd multitask between notetaking and reading this and it made class all the better. No beach reading needed, at least not down Illinois, but there's always those cold, dreary days coming up soon no?!

Seeing as this is only the first book, who knows! Maybe as the series progresses my entire review will change. For now I can say overall I don't regret reading The Selection at all and I can't wait to see what the next two books will bring.  I'll be sure to let you guys know (and get to that DIY henna paste post). Let me know what you want to see on my blog, if you're planning on reading this, what you think if you've already read this series, or anything else. I especially want to know books you want to see reviewed on my lil bloggie so don't hesitate to comment below or contact me through instagram or twitter (@/spontaneouslyxs for both)

Happiest autumn reading. You never know which book you'll enjoy because...
Life is spontaneously splendid.
